Compère

On our evening walk back home from Sunday Mass, my sister narrated an incident experienced by a compère of a wedding she had attended the previous day. It so happened that this fluent English-speaking compère failed to enthuse the guests, who to him appeared pretty uncooperative. His efforts seemed to fall on deaf ears; even the bridal couple chose to sit rather than cut the cake after the Bridal March. As the story goes, it was a bilingual gentleman from the bride's side who approached the compère and told him to speak in Konkani. The confused compère then realized his folly, the wedding once again turned merry, and thus ends my sister's story of this a Holy Matrimony.
