Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom.
- James 3:13

A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver. (Proverbs 25:11)

Isaiah 11:2

The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him:
The spirit of wisdom and of understanding
The spirit of counsel and of fortitude
The spirit of knowledge and of godliness

Slow Me Down

Slow me down, Lord, I'm going too fast.
I can't see my brother when he's walking past.
I miss a lot of good things day by day;
I don't know a blessing when it comes my way.

Slow me down, Lord, I want to see
More of the things that are good for me.
A little less of me and a little more of you,
I want the heavenly atmosphere to trickle through.

Let me help a brother when the going is rough.
When folks work together life isn't so tough.
Slow me down, Lord, so I can talk
With some of your angels. Slow me down to a walk.

A Word

A careless word may kindle strife;
A cruel word may wreck a life.
A bitter word may hate instil;
A brutal word may smite and kill.

A gracious word may smooth the way;
A joyous word may light the day.
A timely word may lessen stress;
A loving word may heal and bless.

"Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless."
- Mother Teresa

The Language of the Spirit

There is one language that is common to each missionary—the language of the Spirit. It is not learned from textbooks written by men of letters, nor is it acquired through reading and memorization. The language of the Spirit comes to him who seeks with all his heart to know God and keep His divine commandments. Proficiency in this language permits one to breach barriers, overcome obstacles, and touch the human heart.

- Thomas S. Monson in “The Spirit Giveth Life,” Ensign, June 1997

The Optimist Creed

Promise Yourself...
  • To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind
  • To talk health, happiness, and prosperity to every person you meet
  • To make all your friends feel that there is something in them
  • To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true
  • To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best
  • To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own
  • To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future
  • To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile
  • To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others
  • To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble

The Language of Landscape

The language of landscape is our native language.

A person literate in landscape sees significance where an illiterate person notes nothing. Past and future fires, floods, landslides, welcome or warning are visible to those who can read them in tree and slope, boundary and gate.
When we shape landscape, we express meaning.
Landscape is not just "like language," it is a language. And landscape architects use it.

- Ecologist Anne Whiston Spirn in The Language of Landscape (Yale University Press, 1998)

The Word

Verbum sapienti satis est ... A word to the wise is sufficient.
